- If gallstones become impacted in the cystic duct, the gallbladder tries to push and squeeze hard to remove the lodged stones, and this precipitates its infamous terrifying pain. Pain often occurs in the upper right side of the abdomen accompanied by nausea and vomiting.

Certain factors have been known to contribute as causes of gallstones. These include:
- Bile containing high level of cholesterol- Normally, bile contains chemicals to dissolve the cholesterol excreted by liver. But sometimes, the liver excretes more cholesterol than body requirement and the undissolved cholesterol may form into crystals, eventually leading to gallstones.
- Bile containing high level of bilirubin- Bilirubin is a substance produced when there is breakdown of red blood cells. Certain medical conditions like liver cirrhosis, biliary tract infections and certain blood disorders increase bilirubin levels in the body. This excess bilirubin attributes as one of the causes of gallstones.
- Incomplete emptying of gallbladder - If the gallbladder fails to empty completely, bile may become overconcentrated (supersaturated) leading to the formation of gallstones.
- Cholecystitis- When gallstones get impacted in the cystic duct, the pressure within gallbladder increases and produces inflammation causing cholecystitis.
- Pancreatitis- A gallstones can cause blockage of the pancreatic duct (tube from pancreas to common bile duct) which can lead to inflammation of the pancreas (pancreatitis).

Do’s
- Watching your Weight: It is imperative to maintain proper weight, and prevent obesity, because obesity entails high cholesterol that in turns increases chances of gallstones.
- Exercise: A brisk walk everyday for 30 minutes ensures optimum cholesterol levels. Exercise has been known to increase protective cholesterol and decrease bad cholesterol and fats.
- Diet: A low-fat diet is a sensible step to curtail the formation of gallstones. Animal fats and dairy products such as cheese, paneer (Indian cottage cheese), etc. should be avoided.
- Consult Your Local Physician: In case of severe biliary colic or if you notice any yellowishness of skin, you must consult your local family physician immediately.
Don’ts
- Skipping meals: When you skip meals, your body tends to accumulate more of fats, decrease your metabolism and increase weight.
- Avoid carbonated drinks: They have been known to hamper the production of bile in the gallbladder and aggravate the current condition.
- Avoid fat-rich foods: Avoid foods that are fried, oily or high in fat. Fat digestion is the prime function of bile, and oily foods increase the strain on the gallbladder.
- Avoid large meals: It is advisable to avoid eating large meals especially before bed time.
- High-Fibre Diet: Make sure you adopt a high-fibre nutritional regime. Stock up on beans, pulses, oats and fresh fruits. Include vegetables like carrots, cabbage, spinach, lentils, green peas and lima beans in your diet.
- Low-Fat Diet: Couple your high-fibre diet with a low-fat component. A fat-rich diet can sometimes cause discomfort in abdomen. Low fat-diet products such as skimmed milk, low-fat yogurt, low-fat salad dressings, etc. work well, without compromising much on taste.
- Lecithin-rich Food: It is said that a substance called lecithin (used commonly as a thickener in ice-cream) helps in preventing gallstone formation. The natural sources of lecithin include soybeans, oatmeal, eggs, milk, peanuts and cabbage.
- Fluid Intake: Drink at least 2-3 liters of water per day. Keeping yourself hydrated is one of the best and easiest ways to stay healthy.
